Ingredients

  • 6 ounces egg noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup sour cream

Instructions

Cook the Noodles:

  • Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the egg noodles according to package directions. Once cooked, drain and set aside.

Cook the Ground Beef:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until fully browned and no pink remains, about 6-8 minutes.
  • Drain any excess fat and transfer the beef to a plate. Set aside.

Make the Roux:

  • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes, whisking continuously, to create a roux.

Prepare the Sauce:

  • Gradually pour the beef broth into the roux, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken.
  • Slowly whisk in the milk, continuing to stir over medium heat. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes smooth and creamy.

Season the Sauce:

  • Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Mix until the seasonings are evenly distributed.
  • Combine the Ingredients:
  • Reduce the heat to low. Add the cooked egg noodles and browned ground beef back into the skillet. Stir until everything is well combined and heated through.

Add the Sour Cream:

  • Gently stir in the sour cream, mixing until it’s fully incorporated into the sauce. This adds a rich, tangy flavor to the dish.

Serve:

  • Serve hot with your favorite vegetable or a slice of garlic toast for a complete meal.

Notes

Lean Ground Beef: For a creamier sauce, use lean ground beef to minimize excess grease. If using beef with a higher fat content, drain the fat before proceeding.
Pasta Options: Wide egg noodles are ideal, but other pasta types can work. Avoid using more than 6 ounces of pasta to ensure there is enough sauce to coat the noodles.
Sour Cream Substitution: Greek yogurt can be used as a substitute for sour cream if desired.
Optional Additions: Fresh mushrooms (up to ½ cup) are a great addition. White button or cremini mushrooms work well. Avoid using canned mushrooms.
Double the Recipe: This dish reheats beautifully and is perfect for leftovers, so consider doubling the recipe.
